On November 6, 2004, the Mecklenburg Chapter, NSDAR celebrated the 100th anniversary of the placing of the James K. Polk birthplace marker.  The rededication ceremony was held in collaboration with the James K. Polk birthday celebration held at the State Historic Site located in Pineville, North Carolina.  Photo: Nancy Mertz

Some of Our Outstanding Programs and Projects:

·    For New Members:  Mecklenburg Chapter is excited with our recently debuted annual spring new members' induction, several introduction parties, and a pictorial membership directory.

·    For Historic Preservation:  Fifteen historic site monuments or markers in Charlotte and surrounding areas have been placed by the Mecklenburg Chapter in commemoration of American Patriots and significant historical events.  We have also participated in the National Library of Congress’ Veterans History Project, which records and honors the contributions of American men and women in service.

·     For Patriotic Endeavor:  One recent program featured a unique display by a local antique flag collector and another was held at the James K. Polk Museum commemorating the North Carolina Edenton Tea Party of 1774, which was the first political action taken by women in the American colonies. After the dramatized program on the event, the Catawba Valley Cooking Guild, dressed in period costumes, provided tea party era refreshments in the nearby Polk family log cabin.

This structure is the birthplace of President James K. Polk, 11th President of the United States. The house, circa 1785, is a North Carolina State Historic Site.  Photo: Nancy Mertz
